Climate Data Projections

The climate science community sources a suite of global climate models to help decision makers understand the projections of future climate change and related impacts, among the most widely used are the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project, Phase 5 (CMIP5) models included in the IPCC's Fifth Assessment Report (AR5). Key projected climate trends are summarized below:

Temperature

  • The mean annual temperature is projected to increase by 1.4 to 1.8°C by the 2060's, and 3.0 to 3.8°C by the 2090's.
  • Projected rate of warming is similar in all seasons, but more rapid in the northern, interior regions of the country than in the southern, coastal regions. 

Precipitation

  • Projections of mean annual rainfall from different models show a range of changes in precipitation for Thailand. Projections vary between +28% to +74% by the 2090's. GCM projections tend towards increases in all models with a 20% variation level.
  • Percentage of ‘wet days’ projections from GCM indicate large increases in all seasons. The maximum increase is projected for November and the February to May season.
